Good news!  When a hard drive, USB drive or other storage media or digital document "crashes" the data can usually be recovered.  The method of recovery (and cost) will depend on the condition of the drive.  Tech Wizards provides recovery services for most common storage media.

HARD DRIVE DATA RECOVERY

In order to determine the condition of your drive and the recovery method required to recover your data a $29 non-refundable diagnostic fee (paid in advance) will be charged to assess the condition of your drive.  This assessment will determine which method of recovery will be required to recover your data files.  This charge applies regardless of the condition of your drive and regardless of whether you choose to proceed with having your data recovered.  For On-Site Service this diagnostic fee will be $77 if you prefer that we pick up your drive and return it to you (within our local service area only).

The three types of hard drive recovery services include...

  1. Level 1 (Local) Recovery - Applies when a hard drive is not mechanically defective or physically damaged, but will not boot into Windows.  If the media can be viewed from Windows and/or the drive can be "seen" by the  computer (within BIOS or Windows), and the data is not corrupt then in many cases the data can be retrieved via a Level 1 recovery, which does not require special data recovery software.  This service is available in all of our service areas but is limited to the most popular types of hard drives (IDE, USB and SATA). This type of service recovers only data files (not your Windows OS or software programs).  The cost of this service is $50.  This charge is in addition to the diagnostic fee detailed above and does not include recovery media.  You can provide your own recovery media (a second hard drive, USB drive, DVD-R, etc.) or we can provide recovery media for an extra charge.  Call for details.

  2. Level 2 (Local) Recovery - Applies when a hard drive is not mechanically defective or physically damaged, but either the drive cannot be "seen" by the computer (or by Windows) or the data can be "seen" but not read by Windows, indicating that the data or file system is corrupt.  This service requires special data recovery software which resides on a data recovery machine in our repair shop, so this service is not available during On-Site Service and is limited to the most popular types of hard drives (IDE, USB and SATA).  You can bring your hard drive to us or your Tech Wizards technician can pull your hard drive and take it to our repair shop, or you can mail or ship a hard drive to our repair shop to take advantage of this service. The cost of this service is $169.  This charge is in addition to the diagnostic fee detailed above and does not include recovery media.  You can provide your own recovery media (a second hard drive, USB drive, DVD-R, etc.) or we can provide recovery media for an extra charge.  Call for details.

  3. Level 3 (Lab) Recovery - Applies to hard drives that are mechanically defective or physically damaged.  If the drive is mechanically defective (often making a "clicking" sound) or completely “dead” and cannot be “seen” by the computer then a Level 3 data recovery would be the only option for recovering the data.  A Level 3 Data Recovery Assessment is required before a Level 3 data recovery can be attempted.  In some cases, when a drive is obviously mechanically defective or "dead", the $29 diagnostic fee will be waived.  For Level 3 data assessments and recoveries we partner with the leading data recovery service in the United States and they have a very high success rate in data recovery.  This service is performed out-of-state and is available for all types of hard drives (including SCSI).  Hard drives can be delivered or shipped to our main North Raleigh repair shop or we can pick up your drive and deliver it and your recovered data to your location (an additional $77 charge will apply).  The non-refundable, paid in advance Level 3 Diagnostic charge is $149.  This diagnostic, performed by our lab, will provide a complete list of all of the files that can be recovered as well as the probability of a successful recover for each listed file.  The cost of these recoveries range anywhere from $500 to $2,500 (or more) depending on the complexity of the data recovery service needed to recover your data.  This charge is in addition to the Level 3 Diagnostic Fee detailed above and does not include recovery media.  You can provide your own recovery media (a second hard drive, USB drive, DVD-R, etc.) or our lab can provide recovery media for an extra charge.  Details will be provided with your written Level 3 Diagnostic Report.
